Make the connection part of the trip

Find a layover activity you can actually enjoy

Choose the outing after you work out your usable time. A relaxed meal, a terminal attraction or one well-placed city stop can be a better plan than rushing through a full sightseeing itinerary.

Stay in the terminal

A useful choice when you want flexibility or your connection has little spare time. Look for food, quiet seating, lounges or attractions in the area you can access.

Visit an airport attraction

Check which side of immigration it is on. Being attached to the airport does not automatically make an attraction accessible during an airside connection.

Explore the destination

Choose one area with a clear return route. Verify entry requirements, transport, luggage arrangements and a realistic airport return deadline before booking.

Build a time budget working backward from your flight

Use your airline’s required return, check-in and boarding times, then allow for your terminal and flight. Your gap between scheduled flights includes landing, getting off the aircraft and finding the next gate; it is not all sightseeing time.

Time available for an activity

Connection time − arrival processing − outbound travel − return travel − departure processing and gate time − your contingency buffer.

Fill each part using your itinerary, official airport and airline guidance, and transport conditions. If you cannot estimate a critical part confidently, choose an activity with fewer dependencies.

  1. Confirm the connection arrangements. Check terminals, boarding passes, checked baggage and whether separate tickets require you to collect and recheck bags.
  2. Check whether you can enter the country. Use the destination government’s entry information for your nationality and itinerary. Permission to transit does not by itself establish permission to leave the transit area.
  3. Price the complete outing. Include both transfers, admission, luggage storage and anything excluded from a tour or ticket.
  4. Set your return deadline. Check service availability at the actual time of day. Leave a buffer for queues and disruption; no single layover duration works for every airport and passenger.

Two Singapore examples that show why details matter

Jewel is outside the transit area

Changi states that transit passengers must clear arrival immigration to visit Jewel. Check your entry eligibility and return journey before treating it as an activity you can walk to between gates.

An airport tour has its own eligibility

The Free Singapore Tour booking site asks for a layover of at least 5.5 hours and less than 24 hours, then checks your flights and available tours. That is a condition of this specific organized program, not a general rule for an independent city trip.

Check official tour availability and conditions

Choose a ticket with the right amount of flexibility

A fixed start time can work for a planned destination day. During a flight connection, compare it with an open entry window or a booking you can cancel before a clearly stated deadline. Check whether the listed duration includes pickup, transport, ticket collection and waiting to enter.

  • Read the redemption instructions: a booking confirmation may still require ticket collection or a separate reservation.
  • Check the meeting point and how early the operator asks you to arrive.
  • Match age, accessibility and luggage rules to everyone in your group.
  • Save the cancellation deadline, time zone and operator contact before paying.

Klook explains that activities can have free, conditional or no cancellation; the activity page and voucher contain the applicable policy. Check its cancellation guidance alongside your selected offer. A delayed flight does not automatically make a nonrefundable ticket refundable.

Layover activity questions

How long does a layover need to be to leave the airport?

There is no universal cutoff. Account for entry eligibility, immigration, baggage, both journeys, your airline’s deadlines, security and a contingency buffer. Use conditions for your exact airport and flight before choosing an outing.

Can I visit Jewel Changi without entering Singapore?

Changi’s guidance says transit passengers must clear arrival immigration to visit Jewel. Check your entry eligibility and leave enough time to return to your departure terminal and gate.

What should I book if my arrival time is uncertain?

Compare offers with a suitable entry window and cancellation policy, or wait until you have cleared arrival formalities. Check availability and the booking cutoff; flexibility depends on the exact product.
